Manufacturing Wales is delighted to share that Philtronics has successfully achieved ISO 13485:2016 certification for its Quality Management System. This internationally recognised standard demonstrates Philtronics’ ability to provide medical device-related services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.

The scope of the certification covers:

The manufacture of printed circuit boards, harnesses, and complete electronic assemblies to customer or Philtronics design, drawings, and/or specifications.
The development and application of full turnkey testing solutions.

Issued on 16th April 2026 by URS, this certification marks a significant milestone in Philtronics’ journey toward excellence in regulated manufacturing environments.

Achieving ISO 13485 required dedicated effort from across the organisation. Philtronics extends a heartfelt thank you to its entire team for their hard work and commitment over the past six months as the company implemented the new standard. Staff Development Initiatives — Philtronics has invested in its people through targeted training programmes, including Six Sigma (which drives data-driven process improvement, defect reduction, and operational efficiency) and SolidWorks CAD design training. Dudley’s Aluminium wins landmark contract for new arena and hotel

Cardiff fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium has secured a major new project, supporting the construction of a 16,500-capacity indoor arena and neighbouring hotel in Cardiff Bay.

Dudley’s will be partnering with McLaren Construction for the first time, installing Kawneer enhanced capped curtain wall systems and manual doors on the arena and Kawneer capped curtain walling and HI window systems on the hotel.

Designed specifically for live music, the new arena will transform the Atlantic Wharf site into a state-of-the-art entertainment venue featuring world class acoustics and stunning sight lines. The 182-room hotel will support the arena’s operation, providing next generation accommodation, designed for comfort and convenience, for visitors.

The development is expected to attract more than one million visitors annually when open, create over 1,000 jobs and provide a major boost to Cardiff and the wider regional economy.

Dudley’s Aluminium announces key promotion

Welsh fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium has promoted Ben Leonard to Production Manager, recognising his commitment to the company and professional development over the last decade.

Ben joined the team as an estimator in 2016 and progressed into procurement after three years, supporting the production team and project delivery.

Upon his promotion to Production Manager in March, Ben said: “I am excited to take on this new role and thank Dudley’s for this opportunity. The team has been incredibly supportive of my career progression over the last 10 years, particularly Nigel, my predecessor in this role. I look forward to building on the firm’s success.”

In his new role Ben will be responsible for planning and organising production, alongside overseeing the daily production process, ensuring material deliveries are organised correctly, and that staff are compliant with health and safety regulations.

Ben’s promotion follows the retirement of former Production Manager Nigel Finn, who worked at the Welsh fabricator for 25 years, in February.

Dudley’s Aluminium books two new education projects

FABRICATOR Dudley’s Aluminium has secured two new education projects based in Hampshire: North Whiteley Secondary School and King’s Academy Bay House School.

Working in partnership with main contractor Kier across both projects, Dudley’s Aluminium will install Metal Technology System curtain walling, windows and doors at each school.

North Whiteley Secondary School is a new development that will deliver 900 secondary school places, including a dedicated resource provision to support pupils with special educational needs within mainstream education. The build will feature a modern, three-storey teaching block alongside state-of-the-art sports facilities including a four-court sports hall, multiuse studio and outdoor pitches.

The second project, King’s Academy Bay House School in Gosport, is part of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme which is dedicated to upgrading school buildings across England. The redevelopment will see existing teaching space refurbished and new teaching blocks installed, providing a variety of learning spaces including art studios, music rooms and science laboratories.

Fabricator completes project with health and wellbeing benefits

Welsh fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium has completed work on zone one of Pentre Awel, Llanelli, a project which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people in the region.

On 15 October, Canolfan Pentre Awel, the largest ever regeneration project of its size in south-west Wales, opened its doors to the local community. It is one of nine major projects under the Swansea Bay City Deal, providing support in health and wellbeing, and offering spaces for developments for businesses, education and training.

The project is being developed in four zones and Dudley’s Aluminium worked alongside main contractor Bouygues UK to install Kawneer capped curtain walling, windows and doors, plus an automatic curved sliding door, automatic sliding doors and mechanical louvres, to zone one of the build.

Zone one of Pentre Awel brings together life science innovation, community healthcare and modern leisure facilities at a single prime location.

The development includes a clinical research and delivery centre, integrated care and rehabilitation facilities, and a state-of-the-art leisure centre complete with multipurpose studios, a gym, hydrotherapy pool, swimming pool and sports hall.

CARDIFF-based fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium has welcomed four new appointments to its team, continuing to demonstrate the growth of the company.

Dudley’s Aluminium has appointed Steven Fry, Paul Hale, Wayne Williams and Steve Lewis to its team in new roles spanning design, estimating and installation. The fabricator’s headcount has grown from 54 in 2024 to 63 this year, reflecting its investment in people right across the business.

Steven Fry joins the design team with over 40 years of experience in construction design, including over 15 years in glazing and façade design.

Paul Hale and Wayne Williams join Dudley’s Aluminium as Installation Managers. Paul brings with him a wealth of experience, having worked in the glass and glazing industry for 30 years including several large projects such as Wimbledon Court One, Edgbaston rail platform, Old Brains Brewery and BskyB in London.

Wayne Williams has 18 years of experience in the glazing industry, working with companies like Alliance Design Services Ltd and The Window Glass Company (Bristol) Ltd. Wayne has a proven track record of delivering commercial projects across a variety of sectors including landmark local developments in his hometown of Bristol.

Completing the quartet of appointments, Steve Lewis has been appointed as an Estimator. Steve has 30 years of experience in the glass and aluminium industry, working on many varied and diverse projects, including residential, commercial, local and national projects.

KLA Opens £110 Million R&D and Manufacturing Facility in Newport, Strengthening Wales’ Position in Global Semiconductor Innovation

Global semiconductor leader KLA Corporation has officially opened a new $138 million (£110 million) research, development, and manufacturing centre in Newport, South Wales , marking a major milestone for the region’s growing role in the global semiconductor supply chain.

The new 237,000-square-foot facility expands KLA’s presence in Wales through its local product division, SPTS Technologies , which has been pioneering semiconductor equipment innovation in the country since 1984. SPTS has previously received multiple Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in both R&D and export, and continues to attract world-class technical talent to the region.

KLA acquired SPTS in 2019, integrating its advanced etch and deposition technologies into a wider portfolio of semiconductor manufacturing solutions. The new site will enable KLA to increase its production capacity and accelerate customer collaboration across key technology areas, including advanced packaging, power devices, MEMS, RF, and photonics .

The Newport facility includes:

25,000 sq. ft. of R&D cleanroom space
35,000 sq. ft. of advanced manufacturing and demo areas
Dedicated collaboration and engineering hubs

This investment enhances KLA’s capability to meet growing global demand, driven by innovations in AI, connectivity, and next-generation electronics .

First Minister backs Llanelli steel fabricator’s call for industry growth at Senedd event

Llanelli-based steel fabrication company, Shufflebottom Limited, took centre stage at a recent event in the Senedd, where industry leaders, apprentices, and policymakers gathered to celebrate the heritage and future of the Welsh steel sector.

The event, hosted by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA), reinforced the industry’s deep-rooted importance to Welsh communities and the economy, while also highlighting the opportunities ahead for a greener, more sustainable future. The event also discussed the steelwork industry, which is worth approximately £1.6 billion per year and employs around 60,000 people in the UK

Shufflebottom Limited, founded as a family business in 1977, has grown into a leading steel fabrication company, now part of Embrace Steel Group. Managing Director Alex Shufflebottom spoke at the event, highlighting both the company’s legacy and its future ambitions. She addressed the ongoing challenges of recruitment, noting that the company has had to employ fabricator/welders and structural engineers from overseas due to a skills shortage in Wales. However, she also shared an optimistic outlook, citing recent investments by Embrace Steel, that align with the company’s long-term growth strategy.

Among those in attendance were young apprentices, who spoke about the need to attract a more diverse and inclusive workforce to ensure the industry’s long-term success. They also underlined the sector’s commitment to innovation, with new technologies driving the transition to low-carbon steel production.

A key focus of the event was the industry’s shift towards more sustainable practices, including the planned introduction of an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) at Port Talbot in 2027, a major step towards reducing carbon emissions while securing the future of Welsh steelmaking, but also an opportunity to provide a sustainable supply chain for constructional steelworkers and fabricators across the UK.

Speakers included First Minister, Eluned Morgan, who reaffirmed the Welsh Government’s commitment to supporting the sector, and Rebecca Evans MS, Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Constitution and Economy. Jonathan Clemens, CEO of the British Constructional Steelwork Association, also addressed attendees, alongside a Q&A session with apprentices from the constructional steelwork firm William Hare. Rhianon Passmore MS, who sponsored the event and delivered the closing remarks, also spoke about the importance of the steel sector in Wales.

Alex Shufflebottom said:

“Steel has been at the heart of Wales’ industrial success for generations. The steel industry alone accounts for 50% of the UK’s steel demand, and innovation in fabrication and erection methods is key to its future. To truly unlock the sector’s potential, we need the next generation of skilled workers, and companies like Shufflebottom Ltd are instrumental in leading this charge.”

Speaking at the event Eluned Morgan, First Minister, said:

“For over a century we have had Steel as the backbone of Welsh industries. It has shaped the homes we live in, the schools for our children, and hospitals that care for us.

“Innovation is absolutely key for how we design and produce steel with real opportunities for growth and jobs, making this a priority for the Welsh government.”

Shufflebottom #womanofsteel MD Alex Shufflebottom celebrates a major milestone

Friday, 6th June 2025 marks a very special and significant milestone in the ongoing Shufflebottom story. On this day twenty-five years ago, Managing Director, Alex Shufflebottom, started permanent employment at Shufflebottom and so on this silver anniversary, it’s an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on just how much has happened at Shufflebottom in those intervening years.

The new millennium

Rewind to the summer of 2000, when fresh out of university, a young Alex originally came on-board at Shufflebottom to help cover an annual leave requirement within the administration team. It was baptism by fire, as shortly after, following a surprise resignation from the then Buyer, Alex’s mother, Lorna Shufflebottom, (then running Shufflebottom) told Alex in no uncertain words: “You’ll be the Buyer from Monday!” As Alex recalls, she was adamant that she couldn’t do the role – she had no experience, it had a range of skills she didn’t have, but the protestations fell on deaf ears. “You’ll learn,”’ was the response. And so, Alex did, and was quickly immersed into ‘on the job training’.

The early years

Alex has often wondered whether Shufflebottom – and steel – were always in her DNA, and she was genetically programmed with the inevitability that she would ‘find’ herself in that new role as Buyer twenty-five years ago. Pictures from her family album show that after her birth in hospital, she was taken home in a welding truck! As she grew into a young child, and when children of her own age were off to the beach, her family days out were site visits, seeing customers, setting bolts, or taking measurements. All experiences that were to underpin her hands-on future at Shufflebottom.

On one of those many occasions, Alex (always with a penchant for pink!) accompanied her father, Martin Shufflebottom, went on a site visit to take measurements, dressed for the occasion in a pink jump suit. Later she was to fall in a hole, where they were positioned in order to take measurements, holding on firmly to her staff, and said jumpsuit splattered in mud. Despite her protestations about her ruined attire, there was no sympathy from the then ‘boss’, simply the words: “Get out of that hole and hold the staff!”. Looking back, those words were formative instructions, as, like all businesses, there have been a few metaphoric ‘holes’ to negotiate over the years, many staffs to hold.

When she was eleven-years-of-age, Alex received her first payment – 90p per hour for Saturday cleaning at Shufflebottom. Her one-and-a-half-hour stint necessitated a 06.40 arrival so that everything was in place and everyone at the benches welding by 07.00. This was an early start for a child, especially on a Saturday, but again, perhaps Alex didn’t realise at the time that she was being prepared for a future role, and that time is relative, and that later, a 07.00 start would seem like a lie-in!

Shufflebottom remained as part of the fabric of Alex’s teenage years and during her university holidays where she’d be involved in many aspects of the business such as data entry, answering the phones, attending shows – all vital cogs in the whole operation – and vital for trying to clear her student overdraft!

A turning point

So, looking back, it might have been in the stars that Alex was going to take her place officially as a salaried member of the Shufflebottom #teamofsteel on that June day in 2000. And it was not just the turning point in a new millennium of the personal journey of Alex, but a pivotal point in the story of Shufflebottom.

A few years later, Lorna Shufflebottom made the decision to sell the business she had been running alone (a true woman of steel!) since the death of her husband, Martin. So, it was in 2008 that Alex along with her brother, Wesley, and Alec Davies, undertook a management buyout. And the rest as they say is history.

Coming of age

Shortly after 2008, one of those ‘holes’ opened up and Alex and the new management team had to hold up their staffs! – this was the time of deep recession and prolonged austerity which saw tough times in the context of steel and construction. Alex remembers these times being some of the most difficult that Shufflebottom has ever negotiated. But, as the record shows, Shufflebottom adapted, grew, and emerged stronger to see the business through other ‘holes’ including COVID 19 and personal tragedies.

Alex and the management team injected new blood into Shufflebottom, committing to drive the business forward from a £12million turnover base. The business became of age, gaining its first CE Mark two years before it became mandatory for structural steel, and leading the way by becoming the first in Wales, and one of the first in the UK to achieve this. This award added profile to the Shufflebottom brand and positioned them for what came next.

Defining memories

In 2014 Shufflebottom scooped the prestigious Construction News Specialist Award, just one of many which have followed over the years since, including RoSPA Gold, a host of RIDBA awards, Training Awards and National and Local Business Awards. Alex will never forget the quote from the Construction News Specialist award judge: “Quality runs through the veins of this business …it is clear that they live and breathe their work.”

This could not be truer of the family of staff at Shufflebottom who have given their all, and of Alex herself, who has literally lived and breathed her work at Shufflebottom alongside her smaller family of husband, Dafydd, and children, Henri (employed at Shufflebottom) and Ruby.

21st Century developments and ambitions

Alex’s work, along with that of Wesley and Alec has seen investments in the production process, including machinery; investments in staff; and in apprentices and the workforce of the future. Their work has seen Shufflebottom being awarded flagship contracts for £million+ across the UK, has seen the staff roll rise to 76, and the turnover rise to £25miilion+. Today, 25 years after Alex becoming an integral part of the Shufflebottom story, it is a company well-equipped for the demands of 21st century developments and ambitions.

Along the way there have been many defining moments, too many for Alex to list. But on June 6th, 2025, she will look back on a company that has achieved so much and has so much more to come. She is proud of her accomplishments to date, and of the Shufflebottom name.

The next chapter

All stories evolve and develop, and after the sale of Shufflebottom to the Embrace Group in 2024, Alex Shufflebottom knows that Embrace’s metaphoric arms will wrap themselves around the business and all it stands for as the business writes its next twenty-five-year chapter.

We’d like to say a big diolch yn fawr to Alex and take a moment to pause and celebrate with her on 6th June.

In summary, Alex Shufflebottom was once asked, “What does it feel like to be a woman in the steel industry?” Alex, being Alex, answered simply and directly. “I’ve only ever been me, so I’ve never known anything different.” Her life story shows us why.

Shufflebottom is proud to announce that it is continuing its already successful relationship with Bouygues UK. Bouygues UK is the lead contractor on a ground-breaking development in Carmarthen town centre that will see the old retail store of Debenhams transformed into a state-of-the-art health, wellbeing, educational and leisure hub that will include a high-spec family entertainment centre.

Shufflebottom is delighted to be part of the local supply chain on this latest Carmarthenshire project for Bouygues UK, having worked with them on Zone 1 of Carmarthenshire’s flagship, multi-million-pound development at Pentre Awel, Llanelli, being delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council. It is always satisfying when a lead contractor recognises the value of our structural steel, project management and capacity to deliver in a large-scale project such as this and re-invests in our skills-set. We know we showed our true worth at Pentre Awel, scooping ‘contractor of the month’ not once, but twice, during the 12-month construction period, and earning Bouygues UK ‘Top Performer Award’. This is a solid footing to go forward together on this latest project.

It is great that over 70 tonnes of our structural steel will be at the heart of this new all-encompassing Hwb, as it is to be known, reflecting Carmarthenshire’s and Wales’ commitment to the sustainability of the Welsh Language. The first of its kind in Carmarthenshire, it is hoped that the development will encourage more people from the region into the town centre to take advantage of the incredible public and leisure services that will be available all under one roof. With a staff of 85 in our #teamofsteel here at Shufflebottom in Cross Hands, we know how eagerly those living in Carmarthenshire are anticipating this new facility opening its doors.

Fabricator goes west to support next school project

Cardiff based fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium is supporting the redevelopment of Portfield School in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.

Portfield School is a special educational needs school for students aged between three and nineteen in the county with a diverse range of complex and profound learning needs.

Funded by Pembrokeshire County Council and the Welsh Government through its ‘Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme’, the redevelopment of the school includes replacing the current lower school building, refurbishing the sixth form centre and the creation of a new children’s residential centre.

The new and updated facilities will feature specialist therapy rooms, breakout and sensory spaces and dedicated outdoor areas to meet the needs of the school’s students.

Dudley’s Aluminium has teamed up with Morgan Sindall Construction on this project and will install Kawneer doors, windows and capped curtain walling on the build.

The fabricator has previously worked with Morgan Sindall Construction on another school in the town, Haverfordwest High VC School, which has won a number of awards including prestigious Constructing Excellence in Wales awards.

Alex has been with Shufflebottom permanently since 2000 after earning her degree in Psychology from Swansea University.

In 2023, the Federation of Small Businesses in Wales (FSB) embarked on throwing a sharper focus on the manufacturing sector. This resulted in their comprehensive report titled Manufacturing Momentum. This document reviewed the evolving landscape confronting the Welsh Manufacturing sector, offering a roadmap for adaptation and growth. In response, Manufacturing Wales, the authoritative voice of the industry, asked its members to scrutinise the report's recommendations. What emerged was a range of insights, underscoring both the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of Welsh manufacturing.

Key Insights:

Navigating Short-Term Pressures vs. Long-Term Vision:

What came to light was that there are divergent strategies among manufacturers, with 55% prioritising long-term investment vision while 33% were grappling with immediate pressures, the rest were prioritising both equally. This dichotomy underscores the delicate balance between reactive tactics and proactive foresight, which was particularly felt amongst smaller manufacturers, who faced greater resource constraints.

Infrastructure Needs and Innovations:

The prospect of a searchable property database elicited a mixed response, reflecting the industry's varied needs and priorities. However, overwhelming support (88%) was voiced for short-term tax reliefs to facilitate transitions towards net-zero emissions, highlighting a collective commitment to sustainability amidst financial realities.

Energy Supply and Efficiency Imperatives:

Despite divided opinions on current energy supply adequacy, unanimous consent was reached (100%) on the necessity of retro-fitting initiatives to enhance energy efficiency. The clear ask from industry to government is for support of practical interventions, including low-cost loans. This underscores a shared commitment in the sector to reducing carbon footprints.

Fostering Supply Chain Resilience:

Manufacturers echoed a resounding call (100%) for the establishment of a Welsh-based supply chain hub, recognising its potential to bolster resilience and foster collaboration. The proposition of a searchable supplier database had unanimous support, underscoring the sector's appetite for localised partnerships and streamlined procurement processes, and supporting local suppliers where possible.

Collaborating with Academia for Skills Enhancement:

A unanimous desire (100%) to collaborate more closely with academia reflected the sector's recognition of the pivotal role that education plays in nurturing the skills and expertise essential for industry advancement. Insights gleaned underscore the critical need for tailored educational provisions aligned with industry demands. This is aty the heart of manufacturing Wales collaboration with its academic members

Government Support and Policy Interventions:

Manufacturers voiced overwhelming support (100%) for government-led initiatives to enable "on-shoring" or "re-shoring" of manufacturing processes, citing the need for financial support, training hubs, and a robust Welsh supply chain. This underscores the sector's reliance on supportive policy frameworks to navigate global challenges, and is the reason why engaging with policy makers in government is vital to ensure they understand the current and future needs of the sector.

Conclusion: The findings from Manufacturing Wales' survey paint a vivid portrait of an industry at the cusp of transformation. From sustainability imperatives to infrastructure revitalisation, Welsh manufacturers stand poised to embrace change and drive innovation. As the sector navigates an increasingly complex economic landscape, collaboration, and strategic partnerships emerge as linchpins of success.

Secure Information Box (SIB): Helping save lives and property whilst building a safer future.

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy and Dame Judith Hackitt’s subsequent report, a significant transformation has taken place in the law surrounding building safety across the UK. The Safety Letterbox Company has recently launched an important tested and certified high security product which could help ensure the safety of residents in an emergency.

The introduction of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 (which became legislation in January 2023) marked a significant milestone, heralding a new era of heightened safety measures and responsibilities, particularly for high-rise and multi-occupied residential buildings.

These regulations, while stringent, are a proportionate response to the risks posed by fires in high-rise buildings. They extend beyond high-rise residential buildings, also imparting responsibilities on medium and low-rise buildings where necessary. In addition, the regulations introduced newly enforceable responsibilities for building owners or managers, referred to as "responsible persons," under the Fire Safety Order.

The responsibilities of responsible persons

The regulations state that:

For high-rise residential buildings (a multi-occupied existing residential building at least 18 metres in height or 7 or more storeys and new buildings over 11 metres), responsible persons must:

Share electronically with their local fire and rescue service (FRS) information about the building’s external wall system and provide the FRS with electronic copies of floor plans and building plans for the building;
Install wayfinding signage in all high-rise buildings which is visible in low light conditions;
Establish a minimum of monthly checks on lifts which are for the use of firefighters in high-rise residential buildings and on essential pieces of firefighting equipment;
Inform the FRS if a lift used by firefighters or one of the pieces of firefighting equipment is out of order for longer than 24 hours and;
Keep hard copies of the building’s floor plans, in addition to a single page orientation plan of the building, and the name and UK contact details of the responsible person in a Secure Information Box (SIB) which is accessible by firefighters.

So what is a Secure Information Box?

In emergencies, every second counts. Formerly known as Premises Information Boxes, which were non-mandatory, the role of the Secure Information Box (SIB) is to provide firefighters with everything they need to know to help them make decisions quickly – from floor plans and access routes to information about vulnerable residents, and materials used in the building's construction.

Typically, an SIB should conform to STS 205 BR2 for external and internal use and be a clearly identifiable, high security A3 box with master keys held by the Fire Service. It contains important information* that could make the difference when attending an emergency situation, including floor plans, on arrival information, residents’ information including vulnerable or disable residents and the current evacuation strategy, as well as building materials and key contacts.

The presence of a SIB is now mandatory

For responsible persons, failure to comply could now mean legal action, fines, or even imprisonment. And for new buildings, it translates to a potential delay in occupancy or development progress – and scenarios where residents are left without homes and developers without returns on their investments.

And let’s not forget, failure to comply has potentially fatal consequences too.

Designed and built in the UK to the highest standards

The design of an SIB is crucial in that it must be strong enough to withstand attempts at tampering, ensuring that the sensitive personal data within remains protected. Plus each box must have its own unique key (the Fire Service will hold a master key for all such boxes).

Embracing Lean Management: A Journey Towards Efficiency and Cultural Transformation

In the ever-evolving landscape of manufacturing, staying competitive demands more than just staying afloat—it requires a commitment to continuous improvement and a willingness to embrace change. Recently, the Caerphilly Business Club, in collaboration with Manufacturing Wales and the Institute of Export, held an event aimed at bolstering the Manufacturing sector.

Hosted by Manufacturing Wales member, Atlantic Service Company, who area company specialising in manufacturing bandsaws and handsaws for supermarkets, meat processors, and butchers, the event highlighted their journey towards embracing the Toyota Lean System Management with the use of Welsh Government funding. The project encompassed multiple cohorts, each addressing different facets of efficiency and streamlining within their production process. Embracing lean principles, the company identified areas of waste, inconsistency, and overburden. Facing the challenges posed by muda (wastefulness), mura (non-conformity), and muri (excessive overburden), they embarked on practical problem-solving, unearthing invaluable lessons along the way.

Operations Manager, Mark Owen emphasising the pivotal role of data-driven decision-making in his presentation, underscored, "It is data, not perception, that propels change. We used three months' worth of data analysis and so the company identified bottlenecks and instigated necessary changes. Through the implementation of the 6M method—scrutinising Manpower, Method, Machine, Material, Milieu, and Measurement—standard operating procedures were established. Collaborating closely with the team, operational inefficiencies were pinpointed, and incremental improvements were implemented through the Kaizen philosophy.”

He then elaborated on the transformative impact of these initiatives, highlighting the newfound efficiencies and enhanced consistency achieved. “By addressing scheduling discrepancies and integrating thorough machine cleaning into the operational process, downtime was significantly reduced, and machine maintenance became more consistent. Strategic additions, such as technical operators and pre-emptive spare parts production, further optimised operations, slashing downtime of one machine from 20 minutes to a mere five minutes.”

Subsequent cohorts of lean manufacturing initiatives delved deeper into inventory reduction, stock control, and layout optimisation. One changed process created an additional 32 hours of labour productivity.

Reflecting on the cultural shift catalysed by embracing Lean, Huw James, Vice President Distribution, remarked, "This project has helped us to review how we operate and our approach to processes in both the factory and office environment. By reviewing our operational efficiencies and how we do things, then aligning our customers' needs we’ve been able to add value for them and ourselves, and look forward to developing this more in the future"

In conclusion, Atlantic Service advocate for the adoption of lean management practices, citing it as a positive force in improving the performance of the organisation. Dudley’s Aluminium secures another project in the heart of Cardiff

Dudley's Aluminium, a leading Welsh fabricator, has secured another key project in Cardiff’s city centre, working on the multistorey car park in Central Quay.

Working with Goldbeck Construction, for Rightacres Property and Network Rail, Dudley’s will be installing curtain walling and doors on the build of the car park in the centre of Cardiff, as part of the Central Quay project which also features residential, office, leisure and retail opportunities.

This is not the first time the Welsh fabricator has taken on a city centre project. Dudley’s has played an instrumental role in the regeneration of the city centre with its work on many of the buildings in Central Square including Buildings One and Two, the BBC, HMRC and The Interchange all at Central Square.

Dudley’s Aluminium secures pioneering education campus project

Welsh fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium has secured a new project for a joint education campus in Fairwater.

Dudley’s is working in collaboration with ISG Construction Ltd on the multimillion-pound project which will facilitate the construction of three new build schools for Cantonian High School, Riverbank School and Woodlands High School, all situated on a single site.

The development will be Net Zero Carbon in line with Welsh Government standards and will set the standard for future Cardiff school projects. Each of the three schools will be highly energy efficient buildings powered by renewable energy sources.

The fabricator will install Metal Technology System doors, windows and capped curtain walling on the build.

Neil Jones, Contracts Director at Dudley’s Aluminium, said:

Shufflebottom enjoys a landmark moment at Pentre Awel

Shufflebottom enjoyed a landmark moment in our long company history when, on 29th February, we celebrated the completion of the steel structure for the first zone of Carmarthenshire’s flagship, multi-million-pound development at Pentre Awel, Llanelli, being delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council.

Numbers count. And we are proud to state that, working with lead contractor, Bouygues UK, we have delivered 1,300 tonnes of steel-work to provide the inner strength for this bold and ambitious ground-breaking development. When finished, the total of four planned zones at the 83-acre site will see the bringing together of business, research, community healthcare and modern leisure facilities all at this prime location along Llanelli’s coastline to promote the health, wealth and wellbeing of the local area.

Pentre Awel is a landmark project for us at Shufflebottom in terms of scope and scale and recognition of our capacity to deliver. It is also a landmark project for Carmarthenshire, demanding a total of £90 million investment projected to inject £467 million into the local economy and create 1,800 jobs over the next fifteen years. It is the largest regeneration scheme in south-west Wales.

It was therefore so satisfying when Shufflebottom Directors, Wesley Shufflebottom and Alex Shufflebottom, were invited along with sixty-plus guests, to the site at Pentre Awel for the very special ‘topping out’ ceremony. We were interested to listen to Peter Sharpe, Bouygues UK Project Director at Pentre Awel, explain the significance of ‘topping out.’ We were told that the phrase is believed to date back to pre-Dark Age Scandinavia, where folklore suggests that there was a practice of placing a tree on top of a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits of their displaced ancestors. In recognition of this, a tree was central to the ceremony and Pentre Awel which will be planted on site as an homage to the spirit of ‘topping out’ folklore.

We didn’t sense any tree-dwelling spirits or displaced ancestors on site at entre Awel but what we did witness was a fantastic transformation: it was hard to think that less than 12-months ago construction had not started and now, the vision for such a prestigious project has become a reality and is making its mark on the Llanelli skyline.

The completed project will make its mark not only on the skyline but on the people of the area. Many of those people are our very own staff here at Shufflebottom who live within sight of the development, have watched it grow, and will soon be using its facilities. We were struck by the emotional resonance of this.

In fact the whole day evoked a lot of pleasant emotions for us. Like Bouygues UK, we at Shufflebottom understand that the success of a project like this is its delivery on time and on budget, and this, in turn, is dependent on the quality of the people in the supply chain. It was so pleasing that we were awarded the accolade of ‘contractor of the month’ not once, but twice, at Pentre Awel during the 12-month construction period. And there was more: the day saw the giving out of just one special award and that went to us, too. It was ‘The Top Performer Award’ and wonderful things were said about the company that made it hard not feel pleased with ourselves.

Wesley Shufflebottom, Director, who has been looking after Shufflebottom’s performance and contribution to the Pentre Awel project since its inception, responded to the award by saying this:

“We are so proud to be recognised with this award. It acknowledges Shufflebottom’s approach to dealing with our customers and how we always try to go the extra mile.”

Shufflebottom would also like to acknowledge the dedication of Bouygues UK in using local sub-contractors as part of its commitment to provide employment, training and skills’ opportunities to local people and under-represented groups. We share those same social and sustainability values and know that the true ‘value’ of the project will be seen in the local economy long after the physical construction phases are completed. This sustainability is at the physical heart of the development too, with Shufflebottom’s structural steel for the frame having an 80% recycled content.

Dudley’s Aluminium appoints new Finance Director to continue successful growth

Welsh fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium has appointed Pablo Shorney as Finance Director to support its growth plans.

A qualified Chartered Accountant, Pablo has a wealth of experience, having spent a decade supporting SMEs across south Wales and south-west England. He joins the firm from Lexington Corporate Finance, where he has spent the last five years advising SMEs on financial and commercial strategies for growth.

On his appointment, Pablo said: “I'm thrilled to be joining Dudley's as Finance Director at an exciting time in its growth strategy. Dudley's has an exceptional reputation in its industry, built over thirty years, for delivering on prestigious projects across the UK. I'm looking forward to being part of the team and contributing to Dudley's continued success.”

Steve Muir, Commercial Director at Dudley’s Aluminium, said:

Biocatalysts Ltd expands its Manufacturing Capabilities with Large-Scale Freeze-Drying

Biocatalysts Ltd, a leading expert in enzyme discovery, development and fermentation for the Food, Beverage and Life Science industries today announced a significant expansion of its manufacturing capabilities with the addition of large-scale freeze-drying equipment at its Cardiff manufacturing site.

Fabricator returns to Oxfordshire for innovative project

Welsh fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium is returning to Milton Park in Oxfordshire as it secures another innovative project.

The fabricator has previously worked on the MEPC building at the science and technology park which is home to around 250 businesses.

For its newest project, Dudley’s will work with Barnwood Ltd on the Nebula scheme which consists of seven new research and development units across three buildings. The scheme is being built to meet BREEAM ‘Excellent’ sustainability standards and is targeting an A-rating Energy Performance Certificate.

Visible sustainably sourced glue-laminated timber will feature in each building, which will also have vaulted ceilings to accommodate large-scale laboratory and high-tech engineering equipment.

Dudley’s will install Metal Technology System manual and remotely operated windows, commercial doors and capped curtain walling in addition to automatic swing doors on the build.

New project to support expansion of radiotherapy provision in Gwent

Welsh fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium has secured a new project which aims to expand and improve the services for cancer patients in Gwent.

Dudley’s will be working with Kier Construction Limited on the new Radiotherapy Centre at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.

The new centre aims to provide radiotherapy services closer to the homes of residents in Gwent and those living in the north and east of the catchment area for Velindre Cancer Centre.

The centre will bring tremendous benefits to the local area by providing new and improved treatment for cancer patients, delivering safe radiotherapy services, and improving the capacity and efficiency of the service by delivering quicker and more targeted treatment.

The centre’s facilities will include a Radiotherapy Satellite with two operational Linac machines, radiotherapy planning, on-treatment review, on-treatment education, and a CT Simulator.

The fabricator will install Kawneer capped curtain walling, commercial doors, windows and doors, in addition to fire rated curtain walling and doors, and automatic opening windows on the build.

New Project for Welsh Fabricator Focuses on Health and Wellbeing

Welsh fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium has secured a new project in Llanelli which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people across the region.

Dudley’s is working with Bouygues UK on the Pentre Awel development for Carmarthenshire County Council, the largest ever regeneration project of its size in south west Wales.

As well as supporting the region’s health and wellbeing, Pentre Awel will create over 1,800 jobs, training and apprenticeship opportunities and is expected to boost the local economy by £467m over 15 years.

Pentre Awel will be developed in four zones and the fabricator is supporting the construction of zone one which includes research and development spaces for businesses, a clinical delivery and research centre, education and training facilities and a state-of-the-art leisure centre featuring gyms, studios, swimming and hydrotherapy pools.

Dudley’s will install Kawneer capped curtain walling, windows and doors in addition to an automatic curved sliding door, automatic sliding doors and mechanical louvres to the build.

Future zones of the project are set to include social and affordable housing, a range of assisted living accommodation, a hotel and business expansion space.

The Rural and Industrial Design and Building Association (RIDBA) is the leading trade association for the modern agriculture and industrial buildings industry in the UK. 540 Jobs at Risk at Global Medical Technology Firm

Frank Holmes, Chair of Manufacturing Wales, has commented on the sad news of the possible closure of Zimmer Biomet. He said:

"Manufacturing Wales, an industry led network supported by Universities and and FE Colleges is deeply saddened by the potential risks facing some of the staff of Zimmer Biomet in Bridgend. The high calibre of skills and quality of products are recognised world wide. Therefore, we must attract, train and retain these skills in Welsh manufacturing. There is strong peer to peer support in the manufacturing community and an offer of help to Zimmer Biomet, should it be required, to assist with job placements through the Manufacturing Wales network, is an option."

Heather Anstey-Myers, CEO of Manufacturing Wales, added:

“Geopolítical and global economic shifts are affecting businesses in many ways and it’s a sad day when the potential loss of 540 jobs is mentioned. Manufacturing Wales is a network established to support the sector, academia and its members. Strengthening the Links in the Manufacturing Chain

Manufacturing Wales, an independent industry led network, recently asked its members the question “What are the pressing challenges facing your business today and your current strategies to support sustainable growth?

We distilled the top ten challenges they are wrestling with which highlight skills and labour shortages, supply chain blockages, rising energy and materials costs, digitisation and automation, net zero targets, logistics and transportation constraints, planning delays, public sector price dominated procurement, geopolitical impact on international trade, and rising interest rates.

Most of these impediments cannot be looked at in isolation, as they are threateningly and opportunistically intertwined.

At the very top of the members’ list sit skills and supply chain constraints.

Rectifying and remedying this will require targeting people with the right skills, if they can be found, but also attracting new staff into the sector and retaining and retraining them; demonstrating that manufacturing is a rewarding career of choice.

Many of the members have recruitment gaps that they are struggling to close. This is why, working closely with Higher Education and Further Education institutions, we seek to establish and train for the right skills today and in future.

Putting this in perspective, UK wide, the sector is seeking to fill around 250,000 vacancies with the food and beverage sub-sector accounting for c.30 %; whilst electronics, steel and chemicals combined approximate to a similar level of requirement.

So even if companies can find the right candidates, soaring labour costs and enhanced benefit packages are eroding businesses’ margins and bottom lines.

The next biggest challenges identified by the survey are the compounding effects of soaring energy prices, raw materials availability and transport infrastructure.

However, it is not just incessant price hikes but the added unpredictability of securing supply that is the bigger concern.

The value of products awaiting completion in the UK is predominant in the sub-sectors of steel, food and beverage, plastics and electronics and recent estimates equate this to c 40% of industry turnover.

As high-power users, manufacturers are concerned with the long-term supply of energy, with national grid limitations the long-term secure supply of energy is a concern.

Structural issues are amongst the root causes of global supply disruption, with post pandemic recovery constraints, cross-border complications arising from the UK’s exit from the EU, semiconductor shortages and the Ukrainian war, particularly impacting the food sector, inhibiting the delivery of finished products.

Supply chain blockages have far-reaching consequences including extending fulfilment timelines, squeezing cashflow and threatening relationships with longstanding and newly acquired customers.

Members are moving away from “just in time” to “just in case” putting demands on warehousing space at premium rentals whilst increasing stock levels to compensate at the expense of tying up precious capital for organic expansion and innovation led investment.

So, gaps in the workforce directly impact production as do supply chain blockages, as do rising costs whilst customers loyalty is tested as they are forced to seek alternative sources, buying for stock outs and insisting on fixing prices or in some cases taking supply inhouse.

Thankfully and against the backdrop of this turbulence and instability the manufacturing community is steeped in resilience, proactive and solution focussed. It is in their DNA.

This may require inventing new production methods, seeking alternative materials, switching energy sources for renewables, investing in extending automation capabilities, forging new supplier relationships with fixed price agreements and clear credit terms and, in some cases, reducing product lines.

Unfortunately, some constraints remain beyond manufacturers’ control and influence.

This is where Manufacturing Wales believes Government at all levels has a role to support the sector, by facilitating the legislation and infrastructure conditions which will enable our manufacturing industry to survive and flourish in an era of onshoring and self-sufficiency. The geopolitical factors affecting the sector today, will require a response that drives a contemporary and fit for purpose Industrial Strategy that can help boost and secure Wales’ industrial future.

Such an approach to ‘home-grown’ industrial policy, in support of the manufacturing sector, requires assistance through investment in energy transformation and supporting pricing pressures, ensuring relevant skills development, continued overseas trade support, removing planning constraints for expanding new or existing facilities and ensuring that there is a transport system that gets our products and people to their destinations, inside or outside of Wales, safely and on time.

The Welsh Government recently released its Manufacturing Action Plan or “MAP” so it is time for demonstrable delivery which Manufacturing Wales and the wider sector wholly support so that businesses and academic institutions can showcase their world class capabilities on the global map.

Ever Wondered Where the Flavour for Processed Cheese Comes From? The Manufacturing Wales Tour of Biocatalysts Gave The Answer

Nestled in Nantgarw is the answer to this question: Enzymes. Biocatalysts, celebrates its 40th anniversary and has seen a 15% pa growth over recent years. Over 100 employees work in this enzyme business that supports both the food and pharmaceutical industries. As part of a multi-national business across, Holland, Germany and USA , Biocatalysts uses cutting edge science to explore and commercialise new ways of using enzymes.

What does that mean? We all know that processed cheese is quite different from dairy cheese, and in order for it to be more like traditional cheese it needs a cheesy flavour. It is a Biocatalysts enzyme that is added to the production process that transforms the flavour in production. You may also know that in medicine maggots have been used to help remove dead flesh to support healing. It is the enzyme in the maggot that is the active part of this process, so by fermenting the enzyme and adding it to wound dressings the healing can take place without the need for maggots. Other Enzymes from Biocatalysts can also be used in a wide range of applications from Mayonnaise to Pharmaceutical catalysts, and in their Dutch business enzymes can be added to bread mix to ensure better rising and improved shelf life of the loaf.

With future expansion imminent, from a self-financed £12 million investment this will enable Biocatalysts to grow and enhance their current wet and dry formulating capabilities and fermentation processes. It will enable them to find new and novel uses for enzymes that will continue to improve both food and health products for the future, whether this is creating formula milk for lactose intolerant babies, or finding alternatives to sugar.

Members of Manufacturing Wales were very impressed by both the production techniques and the manufacturing processes at Biocatalysts’ Nantgarw site. The tour brought together different manufacturers to discuss production, shift management, skills audits, health and safety and digitisation amongst many other things.

Bryan Austin of Renishaw said,

“The tour of Biocats was a real eye opener for me, coming from a completely different market sector I could see how some of the disciplines being applied to the manufacture of the Biocats product could easily be applied to what we are doing and could bring tangible benefits.”

Darren Williams of Stately Albion added,

“The tour was great, and I took a lot from the visit. Although we are miles apart in what we produce the methods and systems are much the same through our business.”

Robert Price, Stately Albion agreed and quoted Charles C. Noble

“You must have long-range goals to keep you from being frustrated by short-term failures.” He mentioned this in relation to some of the building challenges faced by Biocatalysts in their expansion. He added “I think it’s something we can all relate to in our roles, there will always be setbacks, however much we plan, it’s important to remain focused on the long-term mission and not allow those setbacks to discourage us from our long-term goals“.

Rod Parker, Gwalia Health explained why tours like this are important for his business.

“It always amazes me what great hidden gems of businesses and services we have in Wales. Biocatalysts is no exception, continually growing and evolving into the business of excellence that we were privileged to visit. It was great to meet and learn that other businesses and leaders whom identified the same trading and business challenges that we face, no matter the sector and business activity, these challenges are common. The tour was extremely impressive and informative with plenty of energy radiating from the staff.“

I was particularly impressed with the ingenuity in the fermenting part of the factory where they were able to not only reduce footprint, but automate the process so well. They should be incredibly proud of everything they have done to date, and I am intrigued to see how they get on with their ambitious plans.”

Welsh Fabricator to Help Fellow Manufacturer Expand

Welsh fabricator Dudley’s Aluminium will support the construction of new buildings at fellow manufacturer Renishaw in Miskin.

Renishaw is a global engineering and scientific technology company, specialising in providing manufacturing technologies, analytical instruments and medical devices.

The company is investing more than £50m in its Miskin site, with the aim of increasing manufacturing capacity and working towards achieving net zero.

The investment funds the creation of 400,000 square feet of buildings, consisting of two low carbon production halls and an employee welfare facility. The existing production halls will also be refurbished to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Dudley’s Aluminium will work with Barnwood Construction Ltd on the project and will install Kawneer capped curtain walling and manual doors on the build.

Colin Shorney, Managing Director at Dudley’s Aluminium, said:

“We are pleased to be helping a fellow Welsh manufacturer to expand and increase capacity. This project has net zero goals at the heart of it and will contribute to a more sustainable way of manufacturing.”
