Shufflebottom is proud to be at the heart of transformational Carmarthenshire project

Shufflebottom is delighted to be part of the local supply chain on this latest Carmarthenshire project for Bouygues UK, having worked with them on Zone 1 of Carmarthenshire’s flagship, multi-million-pound development at Pentre Awel, Llanelli, being delivered by Carmarthenshire County Council. It is always satisfying when a lead contractor recognises the value of our structural steel, project management and capacity to deliver in a large-scale project such as this and re-invests in our skills-set. We know we showed our true worth at Pentre Awel, scooping ‘contractor of the month’ not once, but twice, during the 12-month construction period, and earning Bouygues UK ‘Top Performer Award’. This is a solid footing to go forward together on this latest project.

It is great that over 70 tonnes of our structural steel will be at the heart of this new all-encompassing Hwb, as it is to be known, reflecting Carmarthenshire’s and Wales’ commitment to the sustainability of the Welsh Language. The first of its kind in Carmarthenshire, it is hoped that the development will encourage more people from the region into the town centre to take advantage of the incredible public and leisure services that will be available all under one roof. With a staff of 85 in our #teamofsteel here at Shufflebottom in Cross Hands, we know how eagerly those living in Carmarthenshire are anticipating this new facility opening its doors.

Shufflebottom would like to acknowledge the dedication of Bouygues UK in using local sub-contractors as part of its commitment to provide employment, training and skills’ opportunities to local people and under-represented groups. We share those same social and sustainability values and know that the true ‘value’ of the project will be seen in the local economy long after the physical construction phases are completed.

By refurbishing rather than rebuilding the old department store, we will align Bouygues UK’s commitment to climate and environmental sustainability, and we will continue to do so as we work on the Hwb with our local supply chain. It will prove to be a vital and accessible base in the community for education, health and leisure.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans added:

We are delighted that Shufflebottom has come aboard on the Carmarthen Health and Wellbeing Hwb project. This development has partnered with Actif Sport and Leisure, University of Wales Trinity Saint David and Hywel Dda University Health Board to deliver on health care services, education, Council Customer Services and a new 24-hour gym. Carmarthen’s newest development will provide a boost to the local economy and increase footfall to the town centre.

This project is funded in partnership with £7million from Welsh Government via the Health and Social Care Integration and Rebalancing Capital Fund Programme, as part of the wider West Wales Regional Partnership Board Capital Programme and also funding of £18m from the UK Government.
